MESSAGE

INTRODUCTION:

A message is a very brief written communication. The excessive use of mobile and basic phones has brought forth inconvenience. But they are otherwise quite useful devices. Their use has been banned at many places such as hospitals where they are considered more of a disturbing instrument than a convenience to the user.

Thus although greatly reduced but the need of a written message cannot be underestimated. Learning to write a short and clear message is a very important writing skill to be mastered.

Most often the input for a message comes in the form of a telephonic conversation between two people. The viral conversation conveyed in the conversation is to be converted to a message for a third person.

When do we write messages?

Usually, we write a message to someone when we are unable to convey it personally. For example,

When we fail to meet the person whom we expected to meet.
When we expect the person addressed to be back to receive the message.
When it is not possible to wait for a person.

Why do we write messages?

The messages are written to fulfill the communicative functions for which spoken words are used. Some of the common functions for which messages are written are:

Informing
Instructing
Inquiring
Apologizing
Reminding
Requesting
Explaining.

Note:

Add ‘please’ before the verb when writing a note to a colleague or friend who is not very intimate.
Inquiries in the message are made with the following expressions:
Would you mind interested in…..?
Could I……?
I was wondering if …..?

The following expressions can also be used for inquiring…

I wonder if it would be possible……
I wonder if you would…..
Would you mind……?
Do you think it is possible to ….?
Would it be possible for you….?
Apologies are made with the following expressions:
I am terribly sorry about…..
I’m extremely sorry for ……
Sorry about….
Sorry for….
I’m afraid I can’t…….
Remindings are made with the following expressions:
Forgot to tell you about…….
Just to remind you…..
I know you remember…
Hope you haven’t forgotten….
I’m sure you remember…..
Requests are made with the following expressions:
Could I …..?
Would you mind….?
Please do me a favour by ….?
Can I / you….?
Do you think you could……?
Do you mind…?
I wonder whether you could ….?
Do you think it would be possible to …..?

The total lines of the message can be completed in 12 to 13 lines (excluding space between)
a.m. /p.m. should be written in small letters. Day is not necessary.
The body of the letter should convey the answers to the questions like why, where, when, which, how etc.
The body of the letter should not exceed 5 lines.

Important points to be kept in mind while writing message are:-

Senders or receivers address is not a necessity. Only a brief situation, i.e., Dear uncle will do.
The word MESSAGE is written on the top.
Mention time and date of writing the message.
Include name of the person from whom the message is originally of your own.
Write the senders name at the end of the message.
Use numerals and conventional marks of punctuation in indicating numbers related to time, date, address etc.
Complete sentences need not be used always. Contracted form of words like I’ll, don’t etc can be used and abbreviations, symbols can also be used.
The word limit for the main body of the message is 50- 60 words.
The message should be in a box.
The choice of tenses could be present, past or future, depending on the ideas/themes of the message to be given.

EXAMPLES:

1. Read the telephonic conversation between Uday and Nani. As Nani has to go out of Station, he writes the message for his brother Sudharshan. Write the message in not more than 50 words. Put the message in a Box.

Uday : Could I talk to Sudharshan, please?

Nani : Sudharshan has gone out with a friend. I am his brother. You can give me the message.

Uday : Please tell him that I am going to attend a show in public gardens at 4 p.m. tomorrow and I want him to accompany me. In case he is willing, he should meet me at my place at 3.30 p.m.

Nani : I’ll give him a message.

Uday : Please ask him to ring me when he comes back.

Nani : Certainly.

Uday : Thank you. Bye.

MESSAGE

21^thApril, 2018.

2.00 p.m.

Dear Sudharshan,

Your friend Uday called up to tell you that he would go to see a book show in Public Gardens at 4.00p.m today. He has asked you to accompany him to the show. You should meet him at his place at 3.30 p.m. today.

2. The sports department of your school has received the following notice from ICL (Indian Cricket League) to promote Cricket among the youngsters, especially children. After reading the message from the sports Department, write a message to your friend Uday to participate in this talent hunt. Imagine you are Rajeev. Put the message in a box and the word limit is 50-60 words.

3. Read the following telephone conversation between Madhu and Vani. Vani is leaving for Hyderabad and will not be able to meet Karen. So she leaves a message for Karen. Write this message for Karen. Do not use more than 50 words. Put the message in a box.

Madhu : Is it 1223344354353?

Vani : Yes, who is calling?

Madhu : I am Madhu, could I talk to Karen?

Vani : Karen is busy in making preparations for the exhibition and has gone to the market to buy some necessary items.

Madhu : I have an urgent message for her. Will you give this message to Karen?

Vani : Sure, Madhu.

Madhu : The date of the exhibition has been postponed to 8^th. The chief guest is not available on the day of inauguration. Ask her to contact me after 8 p.m. today. I am here to share an important detail with her.

Vani : I’ll give the message.

Madhu : Thank you, Bye.

EXAMPLES TO SOLVE:

1. In this lesson “Every Success story” you’ve learned about the failures encountered by Abraham Lincoln. Write a message on his initial failures to be read out during the school Assembly. The message should include:

Failures in business
Defeats in elections
Bereavement
Nervous breakdown
Defeat is a detour.

2. In the lesson, “The Dear departed” you’ve come to know how people treat the aged parents. Imagine you are aged and you notice how your own daughters were preparing for your funeral while you were still alive. Write a message for all elderly people about how to be careful in your old age and be prepared for the worst in these materialistic times. Your message should include:

How you felt?
How your things were stolen?
Advice to all older.
What should be done to take care of one’s self?

3. In the lesson, “The beginning’, you’ve learned about how guilty the author felt after making his father carry his luggage while he walked alongside him. Write a message to all educated people on the topic “Dignity of labor”. Your message should contain 3 to 10 sentences. It should include:

What education does?
Why do people shun manual risk?
Why is it wrong to make the elderly do your work?
Take pride in looking after your own needs.
No false prestige.

4. In the lesson, “The storied House I”, you’ve come to know how people are treated differently in the Indian Society due to their caste. Write a message on Dalit Empowerment in the society. The message should have at least 8 to 10 sentences. Write a message to be delivered during your school Assembly on world Environment.

5. In the lesson, “Unity of Diversity in India”, you’ve learned the importance of togetherness. Write a message in this theme to be read out during your school assembly on National Integration Day. Your message should have 8 to 10 sentences and have details like:

Importance of unity
Development
How to achieve?
How to help one another?
Progressive Society etc.

6. In this lesson, “What is my name?” we are given an important message by the author. Who is a feminist writer? Write this message in your words in about 2 to 10 sentences. It should have details like:

How to Strike a balance in life?
What is important?
What is not so important?
Appeal to all house wives to lead a full life, etc.

7. Women rights have been violated every day. There is a need to aware the public on this topic. Imagine that you are school Pupil Leader and your Headmaster asked you to write a message on “Women’s Day”. Write the message in your answer sheet.
